Barcelona Star Announce Contract Extension Until 2030

Mansion SportsFrench defender Jules Koundé has officially confirmed his long-term commitment to FC Barcelona by signing a new contract with the club, extending his stay until 2030.

The announcement was made by Koundé himself during a press conference held in South Korea, where the Catalan side is currently conducting their pre-season tour.

Contract Formalization Set to Take Place After Asian Tour

Speculation surrounding Koundé’s contract extension had been circulating since last week, with an initial plan to make the deal public before the team’s departure to Asia for pre-season preparations.

However, the high-profile arrival of Marcus Rashford momentarily shifted the club's focus, leading to a delay in the official confirmation.

Koundé clarified that the formal signing will take place once the squad returns to Barcelona.

“Everything is ready to be finalized until 2030 when we get back to Barcelona. The process moved quickly,” he told Marca following a training session in Seoul.

“The club and I share the same vision to continue together. I feel very happy here, comfortable with the squad, and highly motivated by the club’s ambitions.

“I’m also extremely grateful to be part of an institution that competes every year for all major titles. Leaving was never on my mind.”

Right-Back Role Remains the Primary Assignment

For the upcoming season, Koundé is expected to maintain his position as Barcelona’s starting right-back.

While he has occasionally voiced a preference for playing as a central defender—a role in which he was originally trained—he appears to have embraced new manager Hansi Flick’s tactical decisions.

“In football, nothing is ever truly permanent,” Koundé stated with a smile. “I’m only 26 years old, and it’s true that I’ve been playing frequently as a full-back. I hope to take a step forward this season.”

“I’m always ready for the coach; he knows I can operate in both positions. Even though I’ll always consider myself a centre-back, as that’s how I was developed, I’m happy to contribute wherever I’m needed.”

Ter Stegen’s Absence Raises Leadership Questions

In the midst of these developments, another topic drawing media attention is the temporary absence of team captain and first-choice goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

Following surgery, he is expected to be sidelined for approximately four months, prompting speculation about potential changes in the team’s leadership hierarchy.

Koundé responded to the matter with composed diplomacy.

“He’s not with us at the moment, and we haven’t discussed that topic in the dressing room. We understand it’s a difficult period for him, both as a teammate and as a person. As for the captain’s armband, that’s not for me to decide—that’s up to the coach and the club.”

With this contract extension now confirmed, Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to a long-term sporting project centered around key figures such as Jules Koundé. The defender heads into the new season with renewed determination and unwavering loyalty to the Blaugrana.
