Gündoğan Edging Closer to Galatasaray Move
Mansion Sports - Ilkay Gündoğan is reportedly weighing a surprising transfer to Turkey, with Galatasaray now in advanced negotiations to sign the veteran Manchester City midfielder.
The 34-year-old returned to the Etihad last summer after a stint with Barcelona, but with Pep Guardiola reshaping his midfield, Gündoğan appears ready to depart for a second time.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Galatasaray are in direct talks with Gündoğan’s representatives and have already submitted an opening bid.
The reigning Turkish Super Lig champions have long admired the German international and are pushing to complete the deal before the transfer deadline on September 12.
Reports indicate that Gündoğan is seriously considering the offer, though he has yet to make a final decision.
Fierce Competition in Manchester City’s Midfield
During his time at Manchester City, Gündoğan has been an influential figure, amassing over 350 appearances across two separate spells.
However, competition for places has intensified with the presence of Tijjani Reijnders, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Nico González, limiting his opportunities.
At 34, a move to Galatasaray could provide him with regular playing time as well as the chance to feature in the UEFA Champions League.
Contract Situation and Club’s Stance
Gündoğan initially signed a one-year contract upon his return to City, which was extended for another 12 months this past summer. Despite this, the club remain open to his departure as part of their ongoing squad rejuvenation.
The appeal of joining one of Turkey’s most prestigious clubs and working under head coach Okan Buruk is believed to be a significant factor influencing Gündoğan’s decision.
Negotiations Moving Toward a Final Agreement
Talks are expected to progress rapidly over the coming weeks. Galatasaray remain confident of securing the deal, though the final decision rests with Gündoğan.
The midfielder now faces a defining choice: accept a leading role in Turkey or remain at Manchester City with reduced playing time.
Should the transfer be completed, Guardiola would bid farewell to Gündoğan for the second time, having previously let him go in 2023.
