Mansion Sports - Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has defended his decision to leave Gianluigi Donnarumma out of the squad ahead of the new season, insisting the club requires a goalkeeper with a “different” profile to fit the team’s plans.

The decision follows PSG’s acquisition of Lucas Chevalier from Lille, which was swiftly accompanied by Donnarumma’s omission from the matchday list for the UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

Enrique’s Explanation

Speaking at a press conference in Udine, Enrique admitted the choice was a difficult one but stressed it was made to enhance the team’s quality.

“Such decisions are always tough to make. I can only speak positively about Donnarumma,” Enrique stated.

“‘Gigio’ is without doubt one of the best goalkeepers in his position and a wonderful person. However, we are seeking a different type of goalkeeper.”

Enrique added that the move was aimed at strengthening the squad and confirmed the club fully supports the decision.

Donnarumma’s Reaction

Donnarumma, who has been linked with interest from Manchester United and Chelsea, expressed his disappointment in an emotional Instagram post.

“From the very first day I arrived, I gave my all—both on and off the pitch—to earn my place and protect PSG’s goal,” he wrote.

“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of this team or contribute to the club’s success. I am disappointed and heartbroken.”

Since joining from AC Milan in 2021, the 26-year-old Italian international has made 161 appearances for PSG, winning seven major trophies.

He was also a pivotal figure in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph and played a crucial role in last season’s UEFA Champions League final, where PSG secured their first-ever title with a commanding 5-0 win over Inter Milan.

Donnarumma expressed hope of bidding farewell to supporters in person at the Parc des Princes.

“If that does not happen, I want you to know that your support and affection have meant the world to me,” he added.

Captain Marquinhos Responds

PSG captain Marquinhos acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, noting Donnarumma’s importance to the squad.

“In my 12 or 13 years here, I have seen this happen to other key players who eventually had to move on at the end of a transfer window,” Marquinhos said.

“That’s how life is for us—this is football. All we can do is give our all until the very last minute we are here.”

PSG’s Upcoming Schedule

Following the UEFA Super Cup showdown against Tottenham, PSG will begin their Ligue 1 title defense this weekend with an away fixture against Nantes on Sunday.
