LAFC on the Verge of Signing Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur
Mansion Sports - California-based Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC (LAFC) is reportedly on the brink of securing the high-profile signing of South Korean football icon Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The speculation gained momentum following Son’s public announcement over the weekend that he intends to leave Tottenham.
Although the transfer has not yet been officially confirmed and Son remains under contract with the North London club, LAFC’s aggressive approach suggests the club is prepared to invest heavily in acquiring the 33-year-old forward.
Agreement Reached Between LAFC, Tottenham, and Son Heung-min
According to reports from GiveMeSport journalists Tom Bogert and Ben Jacobs, LAFC has reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur regarding the transfer fee, and personal terms with Son have also been finalized.
If the transfer is completed for a fee of $27 million, Son Heung-min will become the most expensive player ever acquired by an MLS club—surpassing the previous record held by Atlanta United’s $22 million signing of Emmanuel Latte Lath.
Even if the deal closes at $20 million, Son would still become the second-most expensive transfer in league history, exceeding the $16.2 million (approximately £12.6 million) fee paid by FC Cincinnati for Kévin Denkey in 2025.

LAFC Officials Held Direct Talks with Son and Spurs in South Korea
The same report confirms that a delegation from LAFC traveled to South Korea to conduct in-person discussions with both Son and Tottenham Hotspur officials.
These talks took place ahead of Spurs' preseason fixture against Newcastle United—widely expected to be Son’s final appearance for the Premier League club.
The match, held at Seoul World Cup Stadium, was attended by thousands of local fans eager to see their national hero potentially don the Spurs shirt for the last time in his homeland.
Poised to Become LAFC’s Highest-Paid Player
Should the move to LAFC materialize, Son Heung-min is anticipated to immediately become one of the highest-paid players in Major League Soccer.
At present, LAFC’s top earner is Denis Bouanga, who receives an annual total compensation of $3,709,500.
Given Son’s stature, reputation, and proven record of delivering on the pitch, it is widely expected that his salary package will significantly exceed current figures, positioning him as the new face of the franchise.
He would begin a new chapter under head coach Steve Cherundolo, though the American manager is expected to step down at the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season. Nonetheless, Son is projected to integrate swiftly and serve as a primary offensive threat.
Son’s Legacy at Tottenham and His Market Value in MLS
Son departs Tottenham Hotspur with an impressive legacy, having scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists across 454 competitive matches.
He was also instrumental in helping the club lift the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League trophy—Tottenham’s first major title in 17 years.
His anticipated arrival in the United States is poised to not only strengthen LAFC’s attacking line but also deliver substantial commercial benefits.
With a large Korean-American population in Los Angeles and Son’s global appeal, the move carries significant marketing potential that could expand MLS’s visibility across Asia and beyond.
LAFC Prepares for Return to MLS Action
Currently sitting sixth in the Western Conference standings, LAFC is in a solid position heading into the final stretch of the 2025 regular season.
Following a pause for the Leagues Cup competition, the team is set to resume play on August 9 against Chicago Fire FC.
The potential addition of Son Heung-min could serve as a critical turning point in LAFC’s campaign, enhancing their squad depth and elevating them as serious contenders for the 2025 MLS Cup.
